Somer Sm of Molecules

چکیده

B y now you should be familiar with position isomers wherein compounds of the same molecular formula differ because substituents, chain branches, and so on, are not at the same positions in the molecules. 1-Chloropropane and 2-chloropropane are straightforward examples of position isomers. A much more subtle form of isomerism is present when two dijfjrerent compounds have the same molecular formulas, the same substituent and chain-branching positions, and, indeed, even have the same names by all of the nomenclature rules we have given you so far. Such isomers are dijfjrerent because their molecules have dijfjrerent arrangements of the atoms in space. These are stereoisomers and this type of isomerism, called stereoisomerism, is of enormous importance to all areas of organic chemistry and biochemistry. T o understand stereoisomerism of carbon compounds, we must understand the ways in which the bonds to carbon atoms are arranged in space. As shown in Section 2-2A, this depends on whether the carbon atoms form single, double, or triple bonds to another atom. Thus, four single bonds to a carbon form a tetrahedral arrangement; two single bonds and one double bond to a carbon give a planar array with bond angles near 120°, while one single bond and one triple bond (or two double bonds) to a carbon are arranged linearly:

Signaling Molecules in Sulfur Mustard-Induced Cutaneous Injury

OBJECTIVE Sulfur mustard (SM) is a potent alkylating agent that can induce severe cutaneous injury. Though much is known regarding the gross pathology of SM injury, the molecular and cellular basis for this pathology is not well understood. General cellular processes such as inflammation, DNA damage response, and apoptosis have been hypothesized to be involved in SM injury. However, the specifi...

Monitoring the electrochemistry of single molecules by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Coherent control of chemical species in complex systems is always subject to intrinsic inhomogeneities from the environment. For example, slight chemical modifications can decisively affect transport properties of molecules on surfaces. Hence, single-molecule (SM) studies are the best solution to avoid these problems and to study diverse phenomena in biology, physics, and chemistry. Along these...

Mechanisms of transcriptional regulation of gene expression in smooth muscle cells.

Smooth muscle (SM) plays an active role in a multitude of physiological and pathological vascular processes ranging from vasculogenesis to arteriosclerosis. Development of therapeutic strategies targeted specifically against an SM process requires an understanding of the molecular basis of the involved molecules and reactions. Investigation of regulatory mechanisms underlying gene expression is...

Fluorescent Lifetime Trajectories of a Single Fluorophore Reveal Reaction Intermediates During Transcription Initiation

Single molecule (SM) techniques are relatively new additions to the field of biophysics that allow one to manipulate individual molecules and study their behavior. To make these studies more relevant to what actually happens in the cell, one needs to move beyond the studies of individual molecules in isolation and study many different molecules working in concert. This presents a technical chal...
